“Walking in the woods, lying on the grass, taking a bath in the sea, are from the outside; entering the unconscious, entering yourself through dreams, is touching nature from the inside and this is the same thing, things are put right again. The psychic depths are nature.”
C.G. Jung, Dream Analysis: Notes on a Lecture 1928-1930 in Nature, Technology & Modern Life
Welcome…
My clinical practice is rooted in the ancient tradition of therapeia: to care for and be in service to a holistic healing. The ancient Greeks called the effect of such healing eudaemonia, literally meaning “well spirit,” a state of inner harmony.
My diverse life experience brings valuable insight and compassion to my work with you. The depth of my understanding and attentiveness creates a ‘sacred temenos’ for your care and our collaborative therapeutic relationship.
Beloved Rufus!
My interest in dreams, ancient wisdom, mythology, the arts and the work of C.G. Jung began when I was a young woman working in the international fashion industry. I chuckle now when I think of the hours spent reading Jung’s Man and His Symbols as a 20-year-old while riding the Paris metro, not realizing at the time that my work in advertising centred around being a living cultural symbol.
My work in the fashion industry deepened my understanding of the injury to each individual when society and the marketplace define what is desirable, acceptable and valuable. The result is often body image dissatisfaction, disordered eating, perfectionism, social comparison, pressure to conform and perform, and low self-confidence. External factors like appearance, materialism and positive feedback from others are mistakenly conflated with self-worth, often leaving one estranged from their true nature and facing the challenges of meaninglessness, poor health, addiction, anxiety, depression and/or relationship struggles.
My path to Jung was opened primarily by the work of writer and scholar Joseph Campbell and Canadian novelist Robertson Davies (specifically his book The Manticore in the Deptford Trilogy). I was drawn to Jung because his pioneering work cohesively wove together psychology, spirituality, the arts, mythology, culture and history in a way like never before. From Jung I learned that psychology was much more than behaviour and cognition. He showed a way in which my life could be reverently understood as uniquely meaningful and in co-creation with a larger mystery (which continues to be revealed to us through studies such the quantum sciences, astrology, space travel, dreamwork and sacred geometry). When the values of the outer materialistic culture and its ruthless economic systems no longer support your physical, psychological and spiritual wellbeing, Jung shows us another way: a way that is crafted and alive with authentic and meaningful purpose and understanding.
My personal journey is a continual process of rooting into and living my authentic nature in relation to the larger world in which we live. In this sense, Home is both within and without. I am full of gratitude for the many invaluable teachers and guides along the way. It is a privilege to be in service and help others in ways that I myself have been helped.
Early in my practice, I founded, secured funding, administered and provided psychotherapy for a successful mental health program at a provincial centre. In this role, I worked with a diverse population and assisted them on many issues such as anxiety, depression, grief and loss, trauma, family violence, relationship issues, addictions and life transitions.
I currently practice individual psychotherapy and parent-child mediation in person, by Zoom, and by phone as a Canadian Certified Counsellor (C.C.C.) registered with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association from my office in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
